Area Guide: Denton

The city of Denton was incorporated in 1866, and is now populated by more than 113,000 residents. It occupies a total area of 89.316 square miles on the northern end of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Denton serves as the county seat of Denton County.

The city is named after John B. Denton, a prominent preacher and lawyer who lost his life in a skirmish against the Kichai tribe in 1841. In the past, Denton served as an agricultural trade center for the booming mill and cottage industry. Its population flourished throughout the years as the Texas and Pacific Railway, the Interstate 35E, and the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport brought in a steady influx of people.
